What to wear for Easter, from the church service to the brunch table to the egg hunt on the lawn — including the formality range nobody warns visitors about, and the layer every cold spring demands.

Easter stacks three different dress codes into a single day. There is a church service in the morning, where the right choice depends entirely on which church. There is a family gathering in the middle of the day — brunch at a restaurant or a long table at somebody's house — where the photos happen. And there is the outdoors: egg hunts on grass that is still half winter, in weather that has not read the pastel advertisements. An Easter outfit has to survive all three, and this guide works through each one.
The good news is that Easter dressing has a forgiving center. The traditional elements — a spring dress or a light suit, soft colors, one good layer — flex up or down in formality without changing their bones. Get the service right, dress the layer like part of the outfit, and the rest of the day takes care of itself.
Dress one notch above the congregation's everyday, in spring weight clothing with a real layer over it. Wear shoes that can cross a lawn. Pastels are a tradition you may join with a single piece — they are not an entrance requirement.
The Date
Easter Sunday in 2027 falls on March 28 — an early Easter (Good Friday is March 26). The date moves every year because Easter is set by the spring calendar of full moons, and where it lands changes the dressing problem considerably. A late-April Easter is a warm-weather holiday: sleeveless dresses, open shoes, lunch outside. A late-March Easter like 2027's is a different event — sunrise services in near-freezing air in the northern states, gardens barely awake, and a real chance of rain.
Plan for the Easter you are actually getting. In 2027 that means treating the holiday as early spring rather than mid-spring: closed shoes, a coat or heavy cardigan built into the outfit, and fabrics with some weight to them. The sections below flag where the early date changes the usual advice.
The Service
The honest first principle: formality at Easter services varies enormously from congregation to congregation, and there is no single Easter dress code. Some churches keep a strong dress-up tradition — this is the morning the hats come out, children arrive in their best clothes, and men wear jackets and ties. Others welcome the same jeans-and-sweaters congregation as any Sunday, with Easter marked by flowers rather than formality. Most sit somewhere between: dresses, skirts and sport coats for many, neat casual for plenty of others.
If Easter is your home congregation, you already know its register — match it, perhaps a notch brighter than an ordinary Sunday. If you are a guest, three safe moves cover almost every church in the country:
For the deep dive on year-round worship dressing — coverage, necklines, sleeves and fabrics for a long morning — see our women's church dresses guide. Easter is the peak of that calendar, but the principles are the same ones that work every Sunday.
The Table
After the service, the day loosens. Easter brunch — at a restaurant, a club or a family dining room — is smart-casual territory: the morning's outfit with the jacket off and the mood lighter. Restaurant brunches lean a little dressier; a home gathering leans practical, especially if you will be cooking, serving or refereeing children near chocolate.
Two things distinguish the gathering from the service. First, this is when the photographs happen — family groupings on the porch, children with baskets. If photos matter to your family, the companion guide to this one, Easter dresses and family outfits, works through coordinating everyone's colors without resorting to matching outfits. Second, the meal is a hazard: ham glaze, dyed-egg dye and chocolate all find light fabrics. A print or a mid-tone hides what a pale solid cannot, and an apron is a legitimate accessory for whoever is carving.
Men's gathering dress is the simplest version of the morning: the blazer stays or goes depending on the house, the tie usually goes, and clean loafers or dress shoes carry the rest. For children, the gathering is where Easter clothes meet their real test — food, grass and other children — which the egg hunt section below takes up.
The Weather
Here is what the Easter advertisements leave out: the holiday is dressed for a spring that much of the country has not had yet. Easter can fall anywhere from late March to late April, and in 2027 it lands on March 28. Morning temperatures in the northern half of the country can sit in the thirties and forties; even mild regions get a cold, bright wind. The sleeveless pastel dress is a photograph. The outfit is the dress plus everything that keeps it wearable.
Build the layer as part of the look, not as an apology over it: a cardigan that matches the dress rather than borrowing from winter, a tailored coat in a spring weight, tights or hose under a dress when the morning is raw, closed shoes instead of sandals. Layers also solve the day's temperature swing — a cold sunrise service, a warm dining room at noon, a breezy lawn at three. The person who planned the layer is comfortable at every stage; the person who dressed for the photograph is comfortable in one of them.
The Colors
Why pastels at all? Easter sits at the turn of the season, and its colors are spring's first ones: the pale green of new leaves, blossom pink, robin's-egg blue, butter yellow, lilac. For generations the holiday was also the debut of the new spring wardrobe — the first wearing of clothes bought for the season, which is how the Easter bonnet became a fixture: a new hat for the first Sunday of spring dressing. Pastels are simply what that new wardrobe looked like.
Join the tradition at whatever level suits you. The full version — a pastel dress or a light suit — is genuinely lovely and entirely of the day. The light version is one piece: a pastel tie, scarf, cardigan or pair of shoes against a neutral outfit. And the alternatives are respectable: white and cream, soft florals, navy with bright accents, and even jewel tones all read correctly at Easter, because what the day actually calls for is freshness rather than any specific shade. Our spring color palettes guide works through the season's combinations if you want to build an outfit around them.
Outdoors
The egg hunt is the day's third dress code, and it is governed by ground conditions. Hunts happen on lawns — soft, often damp, sometimes muddy at the edges — frequently in the morning before the sun has done any work. Footwear rules follow directly:
For children, hunt clothing is a practical brief wearing a party costume: dresses short enough to run in (or worn with leggings), shoes that fasten securely, fabrics that forgive grass stains, and the cardigan still on from church. The garden party outfit guide covers the same lawn logic in summer form — sun strategy, fabrics for heat and evening layers — for the occasions that follow Easter in the calendar.
Keep Going
Spring dresses, children's Easter outfits, light suits and bonnets are stocked heavily for the season — for Easter 2027, the best selection is on the racks from late February.

Easter Sunday falls on March 28, 2027 — an early Easter, with Good Friday on March 26. The date is worth knowing when you plan the outfit: late March is still coat weather in much of the country, so build the layer into the look instead of shivering in a sleeveless spring dress.
Start with what the congregation usually wears, because the range is wide. At some churches Easter morning means suits, dresses and hats; at others it means the same relaxed welcome as any Sunday, just with more lilies. If you are visiting, dress one notch above your everyday — a dress with a cardigan, or trousers with a blazer — lean toward covered shoulders if the congregation is traditional, and you will be comfortable anywhere on the spectrum.
No. Pastels are a tradition, not a rule — they come from the season itself. Soft colors read as spring, and Easter became the day to debut new spring clothes. A single pastel piece, a floral print, white, navy or a deeper jewel tone all work perfectly well. What reads as Easter is lightness and freshness, not one specific color.
Shoes that treat grass like grass: flats, loafers, block heels or wedges that will not sink into soft ground, with closed toes for damp morning lawns. Save the stilettos for the restaurant floor. For children, pick shoes they can run in that fasten securely — hunts are sprints, whatever the outfit.
