Miami Beach, 1997, and the Succession

Versace was murdered outside his Miami Beach home, the former Casa Casuarina, at the age of 50 by spree killer Andrew Cunanan. He was shot dead on July 15, 1997, on the steps of his mansion as he returned from a morning walk on Ocean Drive. The killing ended the founding chapter of the house in a single morning, in the city whose light and color had fed its imagery for years.

In September 1997 it was announced that Versace's brother Santo and Jorge Saud would serve as the new CEOs of Gianni Versace S.p.A., and Versace's sister Donatella — his muse and collaborator from the house's early years — became the new head of design.
