A proto sample (prototype sample) is the first physical sample of a new design, made to test the pattern, construction, and overall concept before further development.
What a Proto Sample Is For
The proto answers the big questions: does this design work in three dimensions? Is the pattern accurate? Is the construction approach feasible? It's a concept test, not a finished garment - rough edges are expected and normal.
Proto vs Later Samples
Proto samples are made quickly, often in substitute fabric like muslin, with minimal finishing. Later samples - fit samples, salesman samples, PP samples - each refine the proto toward production reality. The proto proves the idea; later rounds perfect it.
What to Evaluate
- Design in 3D - does the sketch translate to a real garment?
- Pattern shapes - are the proportions and lines right?
- Construction approach - will the intended seams and methods work?
- Major fit issues - catch big problems now, not in bulk
FAQs
- How many proto samples are normal?
- Usually 1-2 per style. The proto is about proving the concept, not perfecting it.
- What fabric is used for proto samples?
- Often muslin or a similar inexpensive fabric. The point is shape and construction, not final materials.
- Who makes the proto sample?
- Usually the brand's sample room or a local sample maker, not the bulk factory.
