Elegant camisoles and tank tops in silk and cotton on hangers

Camisoles and tanks are the hardest-working layer in a woman's wardrobe: modesty under sheer blouses, warmth under sweaters, a finished look under blazers, and perfectly acceptable on their own in summer. The difference between a camisole and a tank is mostly strap width and intent — camisoles lean delicate (thin straps, often adjustable), tanks lean casual (wider straps or racerback).

Fabric decides the job. Silk and satin camisoles dress up under blazers and suit evening looks. Cotton and modal are breathable everyday layers. Microfiber disappears under clingy knits. Built-in shelf bras add light support for smaller busts; larger busts should treat the shelf as a modesty layer, not support, and wear a real bra underneath.

Fit and Length

The eternal camisole problem is length: too short and it untucks all day, too long and it bunches. Look for "long" or "tall" options if you are long-torsoed. Straps should be adjustable — fixed straps that are half an inch off ruin the neckline. For layering under sheer tops, match the camisole to your skin tone or the top, not defaulting to white (which shows).

Building a Collection

Start with black, nude-for-you, and white, then add one silk showpiece. Replace when straps lose elasticity or the fabric pills — a stretched camisole peeks and bunches instead of smoothing.
