Women's panties in various styles neatly folded in a boutique display

Panties are the most personal fit decision in the drawer — and the one most people get wrong by buying for the number on the package instead of the body in the mirror. The main styles: bikini (the everyday default), brief (full coverage, most comfortable for many), hipster (low-rise, wide sides), thong (no visible lines), boyshort (sporty coverage), and high-waist (retro smoothing).

Match the panty to the outfit first, comfort second, aesthetics third. Thongs and seamless bikinis eliminate lines under clingy fabrics. Boyshorts and briefs win for lounging and under full skirts. Cotton gussets matter for everyday health regardless of the outer fabric — check for a breathable cotton liner. And the waistband should sit flat without rolling or digging; a rolling waistband means the size or the elastic is wrong.

Sizing Truth

Panty sizing is notoriously inconsistent between brands — ignore the S/M/L and go by hip measurement against each brand's chart. If the leg openings leave deep marks, size up; if the back rides, the cut is wrong for your shape, not necessarily the size. High-cut legs suit shorter torsos; full backs suit curvier hips.

Replacement Cycle

Elastic dies before fabric does. When the waistband no longer springs back or the gusset thins, retire the pair. Most everyday panties earn replacement yearly with regular rotation.
