During the early 1980s, some street punks and Oi! skinheads adopted elements of the dress style from the film A Clockwork Orange.

On stage, bands like The Adicts often wear bowler hats, white shirts, white trousers, braces, and black combat boots in imitation of Alex De Large, the protagonist of the film and novel. Some fans also wore fishtail coats, although more often they wore black leather biker jackets or long black Crombie coats.

A Film Costume Becomes a Subculture Uniform

Few punk styles have a single, exact source. Droog dress does: one film, one character, one outfit. That precision is what made it portable. A bowler hat with white shirt and trousers and braces is instantly recognizable and easy to assemble from ordinary shops and surplus stores, so a look designed for the screen could move intact onto the street and the stage within a few years of punk's first wave. The black combat boots anchor the costume in the street punk and Oi! wardrobe its adopters already wore.

Why White?

The white clothing does the visual work. Against the black denim, leather and army surplus of early 1980s street punk, an all-white outfit with a bowler hat reads as deliberately wrong — formal, clean and faintly menacing at once, which is exactly the effect the film's costume was designed to produce. Fans who softened the uniform with a fishtail coat, a biker jacket or a Crombie coat kept the hat and the white core, trading a little of the film's exactness for clothing that worked in British weather.
