Korea Fashion Industry Overview
South Korea's clothing industry is an export industry built in layers, and the listings in this directory show every layer at work. At the top are the trade and government bodies: the Korea International Trade Association, the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) and the Korea Government Homepage, which together handle trade promotion and market information for Korean exporters. Below them sit the fibre, fabric and trim makers — interlining producers, knitters, fleece and lace manufacturers, thread, zipper and button companies — and below them the garment manufacturers making shirts, sweaters, jackets, coats, uniforms and underwear for buyers in the United States, Japan and Europe. Services wrap around the whole chain: CAD pattern design, grading and marking from Ace Apparel in Seoul, and the textile testing institutes listed on the Korea Textile Testing Labs page in this directory.
Geography explains much of the structure. Most of the companies on this page are in Seoul: pattern services in Jungnang-gu, shirt and jacket manufacturing in Geumcheon-gu, knitwear in Gangnam-gu, embroidery lace in Dongdaemun — the district long associated with Seoul's fabric and garment wholesale trade. Daegu, represented here by the embroidery fabric maker Daesan Bestex, is Korea's best-known textile city, with a long history in weaving, dyeing and finishing. Busan, where ACTS built a factory in 1972 and where Hyundai Artleather makes synthetic leather in Haeundae-gu, grew as a port and footwear and materials centre. Ansan and Namyangju, home to interlining and shell button makers in these listings, round out a manufacturing map in which each city tends to specialise: fabrics and dyeing in Daegu, fashion trade and garment making in Seoul, materials and components in the port and satellite cities.
The product mix is the third thing to understand. Korean suppliers in this directory are not concentrated in basic garments. Manufacturing and Sourcing in Korea
Sourcing from Korea works best when a buyer matches the order to the right layer of this industry. For fabric and trim, the depth is in components and specialty textiles: interlinings and fusible coating powders for shirt collars and cuffs, spandex and stretch knits for activewear and swimwear, fleece in polar, micro, print and sherpa forms, lace and embroidery fabrics for dresses and lingerie, and synthetic leather and rubber-coated non-wovens for footwear and bags. Several suppliers state minimum-friendly service directly in their listings — Chung Bo Texpia, for example, invites buyers to send a swatch when looking for a specific knitted fabric in Korea, and will send samples and pricing on request — and the pattern services at Ace Apparel let an overseas buyer send sketches and receive CAD patterns, graded and marked, by e-mail or download.
For finished garments, Korean manufacturers in this directory tend to run vertical or multi-country production.
