Women's skirtini two-piece swimsuits laid flat showing bikini tops with small skirted bottoms

The skirtini is a category of swimwear that is a skirted version of a bikini. A regular bikini is a two-piece swimsuit, and the bikini has spawned numerous stylistic variations over the years — some covering larger portions of the body, others providing minimal coverage. The skirtini features a bikini top and a small, skirted bottom: the innovation is that it provides more coverage than a plain bikini bottom, thanks to the skirted feature, while keeping the bikini's top and its open midriff unchanged.

That narrow definition is this page's whole subject, and it is worth stating what a skirtini is not. It is not the tank-top two-piece — that is the skirted tankini — and it is not a one-piece skirted suit. The skirtini changes exactly one element of the bikini, the bottom, which makes it the right choice for a shopper who likes everything about a bikini except the brief itself. Construction, top styles, sizing and care follow from that single substitution.

The Bikini Top Half

Because the top is a standard bikini top, the usual bikini top vocabulary applies in full: triangle tops with sliding cups and tie closures, bandeau tops worn strapless or with a detachable strap, halter tops tying at the neck, and underwire and molded-cup tops built for structured support. Each changes support and adjustability rather than category. Tie closures adjust widest but can loosen in surf; clasp and hook closures hold a set size; underwire versions size by cup and band like a bra and should be fitted like one.

Support shopping is the top's main task. Look for cup construction described honestly — removable pads, molded cups, underwire, side boning on bandeaus — and straps wide enough for the support claimed. Confirm whether top and bottom can be bought in different sizes; the two-piece format's chief advantage disappears in a set that forces one size on both halves. Many wearers mix a skirtini bottom with tops they already own, which argues for a solid, matchable color.

The Skirted Bottom: Small Skirt, Real Brief

The skirtini's skirt is deliberately small — typically a short panel, often just a few inches of flared, straight or ruffled fabric attached at the waistband of a bikini brief. Underneath sits a complete, functional brief; the skirt is an overlay, not the coverage itself. That distinguishes the skirtini's bottom from the fuller skirts on one-piece skirted suits, which can fall to mid-thigh. Here the effect is closer to a ruffle or a very short skirt at the hip line, softening the brief's edge and adding coverage across the upper hip and the top of the thigh.

Construction points to check are the same three as any skirted bottom, scaled down: the skirt should be sewn into the waistband around its full circumference so it lies evenly, the base brief should have secure, smooth leg elastic, and the skirt fabric should match the brief's stretch so the layers do not fight. In water, a short skirt behaves better than a long one — less fabric to float or twist — which is why the skirtini swims more like a bikini than a swimdress.

Sizing, Fabrics and Fit Checks

Size a skirtini as two garments. The bottom goes by hip measurement, snug rather than loose, because elastane relaxes when wet and the brief's elastic is the suit's anchor; the skirt adds no security of its own. The top goes by bust and cup construction. Then check the combination standing, sitting and walking: the skirt should fall back into place without adjustment, the waistband should not roll under the skirt's weight, and the top should stay where it was set with arms raised — the fitting-room version of a swim and a reach for a beach bag.

Fabrics are ordinary swim fabrics chosen for a two-layer bottom: nylon-elastane for a soft hand, polyester-elastane where chlorine resistance matters for regular pool use. A lined brief base is the quality marker; an unlined base under a skirt is a corner cut that shows when wet. Seams at the waistband should be flat, since the skirt's attachment adds bulk exactly where a waistband sits. UPF claims, where made for the fabric, should carry a number. Nothing in the skirtini's construction is exotic — which is the point: it is a bikini with one well-understood modification.

Care and Placing the Skirtini

Rinse the suit in cool fresh water after every swim, hand wash gently with mild detergent, press water out in a towel rather than wringing — wringing twists the skirt's attachment seam first — and dry in shade, allowing air between skirt and brief so the double layer dries fully. Store flat or hung once completely dry. Wash matched sets together so top and bottom fade at the same rate, and rinse out sunscreen promptly, since it stains light swim fabrics and degrades elastic at the waistband and straps.

Placed in the family, the skirtini is the minimal-change option: bikini on top, a brief with a small skirt below. Choose it over the skirted tankini when you prefer a bikini top; choose it over a plain bikini when you want the brief's line softened and extra coverage at the hip.
