Comfort and Luxury, From the Body Outward

DKNY was founded on a stated design problem: how to make clothing that is comfortable to wear and luxurious at the same time, for a customer who works and moves through a city day. Donna Karan's stated belief, that whatever she designs begins and ends with the body, puts fit and feel ahead of decoration, and the New York in the name is part of the product — urban, fast-moving, built around separates that combine. The first flagship stores, London in 1997 and New York City in 1999, and a headquarters at 550 Seventh Avenue in Manhattan placed the label inside the garment district that made it, and the business grew to seventy Donna Karan collection and DKNY stores globally.

The label structure shows how a designer name is extended without diluting the core. DKNY Jeans carries the denim business, DKNY Active the sport-influenced line, and the Juniors, Kids and Baby labels step the customer down in age; DKNY Men, added in 1992 after eight years of women's apparel only, applied the same comfort-and-luxury formula to tailored suits, formalwear, casual wear and shoes. Beauty, skincare and fragrances followed from 1992, and the 2001 DKNY Home and DKNY LIFE collections carried the name into bedding. The ownership path — public in 1996, bought by LVMH in 2001 — is the standard route by which an American designer label became part of a global luxury group while keeping its founder's name and design premise on the door.
