Hubert de Givenchy Profiles

The life behind the pure line — Beauvais, Paris, and Audrey Hepburn.

Hubert de Givenchy (February 21, 1927 – March 10, 2018) was the French couturier who founded the House of Givenchy in Paris in 1952 and defined postwar elegance. His clothes were built on pure line — the Bettina blouse, the sack dress, black worn as a statement of simplicity — and his name is bound permanently to Audrey Hepburn, whose film and personal wardrobes he designed for forty years. This profiles page tells the career in order: the apprenticeships, the 1952 debut, the Hepburn years, and the house after his retirement. Of all the pages in this series, this is the one the others depend on.

The biography searches in the references gather the wider career coverage. The collections, runway and news pages in this series file the fashion work the life produced.

Beauvais, the Apprenticeships and the 1952 Debut

Hubert James Marcel Taffin de Givenchy was born in Beauvais, France, on February 21, 1927, into an aristocratic family, and studied law briefly before persuading his family to let him work in fashion. His apprenticeships were a tour of postwar Paris couture at its height: Jacques Fath, Robert Piguet, Lucien Lelong, and finally Elsa Schiaparelli, whose boutique he ran and whose wit and theatricality marked him even as his own taste ran toward restraint.

He opened his own house in 1952, aged twenty-four, and his first collection was a sensation built on separates — above all the Bettina blouse, a white shirting blouse with black-embroidered ruffled sleeves, named for the model Bettina Graziani. Separates a young woman could mix and afford were a radical proposition in the Paris of the New Look, and they announced the house's lifelong method: elegance as architecture, built on line rather than decoration.

Audrey Hepburn, L'Interdit and the House After 1995

In 1953 a young actress named Audrey Hepburn came to choose costumes for the film Sabrina, and the partnership that followed shaped both careers. Givenchy designed her wardrobes on screen and off — Funny Face, Charade, and the black dress of Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961), the most famous little black dress in cinema — and in 1957 he launched his first perfume, L'Interdit, created for her. First ladies and film stars dressed at the house, and its black, white and ivory palette became a byword for elegance that did not need to shout.

Givenchy sold his house to LVMH in 1988 and retired from couture in 1995. The house has since been led by John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Julien Macdonald, Riccardo Tisci, Clare Waight Keller and Matthew M. Williams, each re-reading the founder's line for a new decade. He died on March 10, 2018. Read with the collections page, the profile completes its arc: a couturier who proved that simplicity, cut perfectly, is the most durable form of luxury.
