Lilly Pulitzer Profiles

The life behind the prints — a juice stand, a shift dress, and Palm Beach.

Lilly Pulitzer — Lillian Pulitzer Rousseau (1931–2013) — was an American socialite and fashion designer. She founded Lilly Pulitzer, Inc., which produces clothing and other wares featuring bright, colorful, floral prints; as the brand is popular with high society, she was referred to as the “Queen of Prep”. This profiles page tells the career in order: the Palm Beach juice stand where it began, the printed shift dress invented to hide juice stains, and the resort empire that followed. Of all the pages in this series, this is the one the others depend on.

The biography searches in the references gather the wider career coverage, and the brand's official website is linked there as well. The collections, runway and news pages in this series file the fashion work the life produced.

The Juice Stand and the Shift Dress

Born Lillian McKim on November 10, 1931, she married Peter Pulitzer, heir to a citrus and publishing family, and settled in Palm Beach. Convalescing and at loose ends, she opened a juice stand on Worth Avenue selling citrus squeezed from her husband's groves — work that ruined dress after dress with juice stains. Her answer was a dress designed around the problem: a simple, sleeveless shift in bright, wildly patterned cotton, made by her dressmaker, on which a splash of orange or grapefruit simply disappeared into the print.

Customers began ordering the dresses along with the juice, then instead of it. A school friend, Jacqueline Kennedy, was photographed on vacation wearing one, and the printed shift became a national sensation — the rare fashion phenomenon that began as pure practicality. In 1959 she formalized the business as Lilly Pulitzer, Inc., with the prints — all bright florals and tropical motifs in pink, green, turquoise and yellow — as its unmistakable signature.

The Queen of Prep

Through the 1960s and 1970s the shifts, tunics, capris and resort separates in those prints became the uniform of American resort life from Palm Beach to Nantucket — clothes designed for sunshine, leisure and society, sold in her own cheerful shops where the juice-stand spirit survived in the décor. The company passed through changes of ownership and a quieter period after she stepped back, then revived strongly as new generations discovered the prints.

She died on April 7, 2013, in Palm Beach, and the brand that carries her name continues under its prints-first philosophy. Read with the collections page, the profile completes its arc: a socialite who needed a dress that could survive a juice stand, and in solving that small problem invented one of the most durable print identities in American fashion.

Common Questions

Who was Lilly Pulitzer?

Lillian Pulitzer Rousseau (November 10, 1931 – April 7, 2013), better known as Lilly Pulitzer, was an American socialite and fashion designer who founded Lilly Pulitzer, Inc., which produces clothing featuring bright, colorful, floral prints — and made her the 'Queen of Prep'.

How did the Lilly Pulitzer dress start?

At her Palm Beach juice stand, selling citrus from her husband's groves, she had simple shift dresses made in bright, busy printed cotton so juice stains would not show. Customers asked for the dresses instead of the juice — and the printed shift became the foundation of the company she founded in 1959.

Why is Lilly Pulitzer called the Queen of Prep?

Because her bright printed resort clothes became the uniform of American high-society leisure — worn in Palm Beach and resort towns everywhere, and famously photographed on Jacqueline Kennedy, a school friend, in the early 1960s.
