The Company Description of Its Time

This profile is deliberately about the Aéropostale retail business itself - the teen chain, its stores and its ownership story. Its children's sibling concept has its own page in this letter (P.S. from Aéropostale), given a different angle there. A July 2023 summary describes Aéropostale as a specialty retailer of high-quality denim and fashion basics offered at compelling values in an innovative and exciting store environment, adding that through the brand's Oneness ethos, Aéropostale embraces acceptance, empathy and respect to promote a sense of unity.

The Earlier Record: Mall Retail and Chapter 11

The older filing underneath describes the business in its listed-company form: Aéropostale, Inc. (NYSE: ARO) is a mall-based, specialty retailer of casual apparel and accessories, principally targeting 14 to 17 year-old young women and men, providing a focused selection of high-quality, active-oriented, fashion and fashion basic merchandise at compelling values. Aéropostale maintains control over its proprietary brands by designing, sourcing, marketing and selling all of its own merchandise, and its products could only be purchased in its stores or online through its e-commerce website. The first Aéropostale store was opened in 1987 in the New York Area, and the history of the Aéropostale name dates back to the 1920s.

Between those two descriptions sits the event recorded in the company(?:'|')s own announcement language: on May 4, 2016 Aéropostale, Inc. filed voluntary petitions under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York, expecting to use the process to optimize its store footprint, shed or renegotiate burdensome contracts, resolve its ongoing disputes with Sycamore Partners and achieve long-term financial stability, and intending to emerge within six months as a standalone enterprise with a smaller store base. That statement stands as history; the 2023 summary above is the later word on who operates the brand.
