This section contains concepts and terms that are of interest to members of the apparel industry, fashion industry or textile industry. The goal of this area is to provide information formatted around key topics of interest to the industry in which we work, as well as to the ultimate consumer of fashion products. On this page, you will find areas of interest that begin with the letter “J”. The J terms are a compact, varied set: a historical style topic in the Jacobean era and Jacobean prints, a fabric comparison in jersey versus interlock, a trade topic in jobbers, a garment topic in jogger pants, and a retail trimming topic in joker tickets.

On this page, you will find areas of interest that begin with the letter "J".
The J letter is small, but its five entries span the full width of the industry. One entry is historical: the Jacobean era and its prints connect a period of English and Scottish history under King James I (1603-1625) to embroidery and upholstery designs still described with the Jacobean name, with motifs of branches, fruits, flowers and birds. One entry is technical: jersey versus interlock explains how to tell two common knit fabrics apart by looking at the back of the fabric and testing whether a cut edge curls. One entry is commercial: a jobber is the middleman who buys surplus fabric from garment manufacturers, often their entire leftover stock, and resells it to retailers at prices that can still land near or below wholesale even after two markups.
The remaining two entries are product topics. Jogger pants trace how an athletic style built around an elasticized drawstring waist, tapered legs and ribbed ankle cuffs moved from 1970s exercise wear into everyday athleisure and streetwear, made in cotton, fleece, polyester blends and jersey knit. Joker tickets are the small price tickets hanging from clothing — carrying the price along with a UPC code, department number and style number, and attached with a swift tack using a tagging tool. A reader can move from any one of these topics to its neighbors through the list at the top of this page, or browse the other letters of the directory through the letter bar below.
Start with the term list directly under the introduction — those five links are the whole J section, each exactly one click away. Readers looking for a topic rather than a letter can use Fashion Terms by Category, which groups terms around subjects such as trimming terms and other clothing components, and the full Fashion Terms Directory for the complete A to Z listing across both directory pages. Terms that start with a number have their own directory page as well, linked from the letter bar.
The J section of the directory covers the Jacobean era and Jacobean prints, jersey versus interlock fabric, jobbers, jogger pants and joker tickets — each linked from the term list on this page.
Every J term has its own page with a definition and explanation written for the apparel, fashion and textile industries. The list on this page links to each of them, and the Fashion Terms Directory links onward to the other letter directories.
The terms are written for members of the apparel, fashion and textile industries and for consumers of fashion products who want a plain explanation of an industry concept.
