High-Visibility Clothing

High-visibility clothing is any clothing worn that has highly reflective properties or a color that is easily discernable from any background. Part of the surface of clothes may be made retroreflective (small parts of coats, large parts of special safety clothes for rescue workers etc.). This way they become much more visible in the dark for observers near a light source, such as the driver of a car with its headlights on. The pattern of the retroreflecting parts also helps to distinguish between objects and people.

For greater visibility at daytime, as well as for decoration, very bright colors are obtained with fluorescence.

Two Systems: Fluorescence by Day, Retroreflection by Night

High-visibility clothing works in two different lighting conditions, and it uses a different system for each. In daylight, visibility comes from colour: fluorescent yellow-green, orange and red fabrics absorb ultraviolet light and re-emit it as visible light, so the colour appears brighter than its surroundings and is easily discernable from any background. That is the principle of the orange hunting vest, whose colour both stands out against woodland and identifies the wearer as a person rather than game. After dark, colour alone fails, and the second system takes over: retroreflective material returns light directly back toward its source, so a strip on a jacket lights up in a car's headlights for the driver, while remaining an ordinary grey band in daylight.

Placement is part of the design. Retroreflective bands are arranged in patterns — around the torso, over the shoulders, around arms and legs — because the pattern of the retroreflecting parts helps an observer distinguish a person from a signpost or a parked vehicle, and bands on moving limbs make the motion of a walking or cycling person recognisable. The garments themselves are usually simple and roomy, vests and jackets worn over ordinary work clothes, with the safety surface added to a standard garment pattern. High-visibility clothing is the deliberate opposite of camouflage: where a camouflage pattern breaks up the wearer's outline to blend into a background, high-visibility design maximises contrast against every background, which is why it is standard for rescue workers, road and rail workers, and for runners, cyclists and children outdoors near traffic.
