The C list of fifteen companies spans the full range of the American clothing trade. Designer fashion is represented twice over by one house: Calvin Klein, the minimalist brand founded in 1968 that grew from a New York coat shop into jeans, underwear and fragrance, and Calvin Klein Collection, its black label top-end designer line for menswear and womenswear. Retail and juniors brands account for several more: C28, the faith based Christian clothing store for teenagers founded in 2001; Candie's, the shoe brand from 1981 whose juniors apparel and jewelry are sold at Kohl's; and Charlotte Russe, the San Diego specialty chain selling trendy clothing to women in their teens through twenties. The Carlisle Collection stands apart from all of them, selling elegant classic women's clothing by private appointment through consultants in over 500 cities, with no stores at all.
Sport, outdoor and activity clothing form the second half of the list. Champion is sportswear — inventor of the sports bra, reversible t-shirts and breathable mesh, and a staple of hip hop fashion through its hooded sweatshirt; Columbia Sportswear, founded in Portland in 1938 as a hat distributor, makes outerwear, skiwear and footwear; Circa makes skateboard footwear and apparel from San Clemente; and Crocs built a footwear business on a plastic clog in its proprietary Croslite foam. Chip and Pepper covers designer jeans, relaunched in Los Angeles in 2003 after a television career and a trademark battle; Colorado Trading & Clothing is a Denver textile company; Coskel University makes Caribbean-inspired street gear in Brooklyn drawing on Trinidad and Tobago culture; and Crazy Shirts, established in Honolulu in 1964, is among the first companies to design, manufacture and sell island wear T-shirts. Coach, Inc. completes the fifteen.
United States clothing companies are filed alphabetically by company name, one letter per index page, so a company can be found by its first letter even when its full history is unknown. Each definition is a concise profile rather than a full company history: founding facts, headquarters, products, brands and lines, ownership where it is notable, and the events that made the company worth defining. Readers who need more depth on a company can follow the path into the Apparel Search fashion company profiles in the names directory, where major companies carry fuller profiles, and the clothing definitions list covers the garment and fabric terms used in these pages.
Companies change — they are acquired, renamed, or close — so a definition records the company as described at the time of writing, including dated facts such as acquisitions with their years. Where a definition gives a date, a founder or a place, that detail is part of the company's record and the quickest way to tell similar names apart.
The C list covers C28, Calvin Klein, Calvin Klein Collection, Candie's, Carlisle Collection, Champion, Charlotte Russe, Chip and Pepper, Circa, Coach, Inc., Colorado Trading & Clothing, Columbia Sportswear, Coskel University, Crazy Shirts and Crocs. Each name links to that company's definition page.
Each definition page describes the company itself: what it makes or sells, when and where it was founded, the brands and lines it owns, and the notable events in its history, in a short standardised profile format.
