Guide to the G Companies

The four G companies work in four very different corners of the clothing business. Gama Go is the artist-led company: started in San Francisco in 2000 by Greg Long and Chris Edmundson, who began silkscreening t-shirts with artwork from their friends, it specialises in unique apparel, gifts and art from artists including Tim Biskup and Joe Ledbetter. Gerry Outdoor Gear and Clothing is the heritage outdoor name: founded by Gerald Cunningham in Denver in 1946, known around 1980 for innovative, brightly coloured down garments, dormant for several years, and later owned by Amerex Group as a division marketing clothing for cold weather outdoor activities.

Getem Boy and Guess sit at opposite scales. Getem Boy, founded in Philadelphia in 2002 by former pro-boxer Lou Ramos and his wife Katina Ramos, produces clothing and fight gear aimed at the mixed martial arts community. Guess, founded in California in 1981 by the four Marciano brothers, became one of the defining designer denim brands of the 1980s with its stone washed Marilyn jeans, black-and-white advertising, and later lines including watches, Baby Guess, Marciano and G by Guess.

How These Definitions Are Organised

United States clothing companies are filed alphabetically by company name, one letter per index page, so a company can be found by its first letter even when its full history is unknown. Each definition is a concise profile rather than a full company history: founding facts, headquarters, products, brands and lines, ownership where it is notable, and the events that made the company worth defining. A small letter like G still shows why the alphabetical approach helps: an art-driven t-shirt label, an outdoor brand, a fight gear company and a global denim name have nothing in common except their initial, and the index puts each one click away.

Readers who need more depth on a company can follow the path into the Apparel Search fashion company profiles in the names directory, where major companies carry fuller profiles. Companies change — they are acquired, renamed, relaunched or close — so a definition records the company as described at the time of writing, including dated facts such as acquisitions and product launches with their years, so the record stays useful even after the company itself has moved on.
