Guide to the S Companies

S is the largest letter in this part of the directory, and its eleven entries span more than a century of American clothing business. Schott NYC, founded in New York City in 1913 by brothers Irving and Jack Schott, created the Perfecto motorcycle jacket and was the first company to put a zipper on a jacket. Spiegel began as a Chicago wareroom just after the Civil War and became a $3 billion international specialty retailer built on mail order. Simplicity Pattern, begun in New York City in 1927, gave home seamstresses step-by-step patterns through the Great Depression and beyond. S. Schwab Company, started by French immigrant Sam Schwab and later based in manufacturing in Cumberland, Maryland, became known for the Little Me line of high-end clothing for infants and toddlers.

The newer entries show clothing merging with other industries. Scottevest, founded in 2000 and headquartered in Ketchum, Idaho, designs clothing with a patented conduit system and many pockets for phones, music players and other devices. Sean John, launched in 1998, grew from an urban label to an international clothing and fragrance brand with revenues exceeding $100 million annually in the period covered. ShockHound, launched by Hot Topic in 2008, combined a music download site, a retail store and a social networking platform selling band t-shirts and merchandise. Society of the Spectacle, founded in Costa Mesa in 2007 by siblings Namanh and Julianne Hoang, produces casual wear as wearable artwork on social and political themes, and Spyder is a premium branded skiing apparel maker described as the world's largest ski specialty brand.

How to Use These Definitions

Each linked definition follows the same pattern, stating what the company makes or sells, where it is based, who founded it and when, and the events that made it notable. Two entries need a reader's note. Sara Lee Corporation is a global consumer-goods company whose record here is long and largely about food and household brands, included because of the corporation's scale and its place in American consumer industry history. Steve Rosswick's entry is a biographical record of an American actor, preserved as given. For fuller company detail, pair a definition with the company's profile in the Apparel Search names directory, and use the clothing definitions glossary for product terms such as Perfecto, pattern and catalog retailing.
