The W index gathers five companies that share almost nothing except a first letter, and that is the point of an alphabetical directory. Warnaco Group is a New York fashion corporation with annual revenues over $1.4 billion in 2004, built on a portfolio of intimate and swim brands including Warner's, Olga, Calvin Klein, Catalina and Speedo. Warrior Lacrosse is a Warren, Michigan manufacturer of lacrosse equipment and apparel founded in 1992 by Dave Morrow. We Love Colors is a Miami marketer, retailer and manufacturer of colorful hosiery and dancewear founded in 2003, offering over 51 colors on most products.
WestPoint Home is a home textiles conglomerate whose history runs back over 200 years through J.P. Stevens, Pepperell Manufacturing and West Point Manufacturing, with brands including Martex, Stevens and Lady Pepperell. Wet Seal is a young women's clothing retailer founded in Newport Beach, California in 1962, which grew to 494 stores by February 2008 under the Wet Seal and Arden B brands. Between them, the five W companies cover underwear, sports equipment, hosiery, bedding and mall retail - a useful reminder that a clothing directory is a cross-section of an industry, not a single category.
The founding dates alone sketch American apparel history. WestPoint Home reaches back over 200 years through its merged mill companies. Wet Seal began as a single Newport Beach store in 1962 and grew into two national mall chains. Warnaco Group was already reporting over $1.4 billion in annual revenues by 2004. Warrior Lacrosse started in 1992 with four titanium poles made in a Michigan tubing shop, and We Love Colors began in Miami in 2003 with a single idea - hosiery in more than fifty colors. Five companies, five different centuries of origin stories, one letter.
The W list covers Warnaco Group, Warrior Lacrosse, We Love Colors, WestPoint Home and Wet Seal. Each name links to that company's definition.
Each definition describes the company itself: what it makes or sells, when and where it was founded, the brands and lines it owns, and the notable events in its history, in a short standardised profile format.
