Fashion accessories are defined by their relationship to the main garment. They are not the dress or apparel itself, but items used as its complement, added to complete, adjust or transform how the outfit reads. That complementary role gives accessories two opposite powers in the same wardrobe. They help to bring up the spot that a wearer wants to highlight in a dress, drawing the eye to a waist, a neckline, a wrist or an ankle, and they can also help to hide a weaker part of a dress, redirecting attention away from an area the wearer prefers not to emphasise. A well-chosen accessory therefore does practical visual work: it balances proportion, adds a focal point where an outfit is plain, and softens or covers where an outfit needs help. Because the garment underneath stays the same, the accessory is often the most efficient way to correct the balance of a look, and small differences in size, colour or placement can decide whether the result feels deliberate or accidental.

The jewelry counterpart of fashion accessories is referred to as costume jewelry. That pairing matters because it shows accessories are a broad category, not a single product type. On the clothing side the category reaches from belts and handbags to shoes, while on the jewelry side it includes pieces such as chandelier earrings and dangle earrings worn for fashion effect rather than as fine jewelry. Leg warmers in the style of the 1980s also belong in the discussion, because an item does not need to be permanent or structural to be an accessory; it needs to be worn or carried as a complement that changes the outfit. Cufflinks belong in the same family for formal shirts, serving as both a fastening and a visible detail. Understanding accessories as a group, rather than as a list of unrelated extras, explains why stores, magazines and stylists treat belts, bags, shoes and jewelry together when they describe a finished look, and why a change in any one of them is reported as a change in fashion itself.

How Accessory Trends Change an Entire Look

Trends are continuously set by adding accessories to different outfits, which is why accessories often move faster than the garments beneath them. A dress can stay in a wardrobe for years while the belt, bag and earrings worn with it change with each season, updating the same base outfit without replacing it. The belt example shows the mechanism clearly. In one period, thick belts that would never fit into belt loops became widely worn as a fashion accessory in their own right, worn over dresses and tops as a visible feature rather than threaded through loops as a purely functional fastener. Soon the style was seen everywhere, then the preference reversed and wide belts were out, with slimmer styles such as ribbon belts coming in. The garment did not change; the accessory did, and the entire look changed with it. This cycle also explains why accessory trends are closely watched: they signal a new direction early, at a scale that many wearers can adopt quickly.

That same principle applies across the full accessory range, from handbags to shoes to chandelier earrings and dangle earrings to leg warmers. Swapping a structured handbag for a soft one changes the formality of an outfit, changing shoes changes its height, colour and occasion, and changing earrings changes how the face and neckline are framed. Because accessories sit at the edges and focal points of dress, small changes there have an outsized effect on the whole. For shoppers and for the clothing industry, this makes accessories both an entry point into a trend and a practical tool: a person can adopt a new look, test a colour, or make an older dress feel current by changing the complementary items, while retailers can offer trend participation at a smaller scale than a full new outfit requires. The definition therefore stays practical throughout: an accessory is judged not only by what it is made of, but by what it does to the outfit it completes.
