Sara Lee Corporation was an American consumer-goods company based in Downers Grove, Illinois, with operations in more than 40 countries and products sold in over 180. For fashion jobseekers its importance was its Branded Apparel division: under names such as Hanes, Champion, Playtex, Bali, Just My Size and L'eggs, Sara Lee was for years one of the largest makers of underwear, activewear and hosiery in the world, employing designers, product managers, sourcing specialists and factory staff on a large scale.

That apparel business no longer sits inside anything called Sara Lee. In 2006 the corporation spun off its Branded Apparel, Americas/Asia business to shareholders as a separate public company, Hanesbrands Inc., and the remaining Sara Lee split in two in 2012, into the meat company Hillshire Brands and an international coffee and tea business. In 2012 the corporation divided those in two as well. Its North American meat and foodservice operations became Hillshire Brands — later acquired by Tyson Foods in 2014 — while the international coffee and tea business became D.E Master Blenders 1753, the ancestor of today's JDE Peet's coffee group.

The Sara Lee name itself survives mainly as a food brand — frozen desserts and bakery products now produced by a separate Sara Lee Frozen Bakery company formed after a later sale. None of these successors is an apparel employer, which is why a search for fashion jobs at Sara Lee leads only to history: the fashion side of the story begins and ends with the Hanesbrands separation.

Anyone whose Sara Lee experience was in clothing will find the continuation of that work at Hanesbrands, which kept the Hanes, Champion, Bali and Playtex brand teams, the product development and sourcing organisations, and the supply chain built under Sara Lee. Comparable basics-category careers also exist at the other large underwear and activewear makers and at the private-label suppliers who produce core garments for major retailers.

When citing Sara Lee on a résumé, the accurate framing is the division and dates: branded apparel roles before September 2006 were Sara Lee roles in a business that then became Hanesbrands, and recruiters in the basics trade understand that lineage well. Claiming a current Sara Lee fashion role, by contrast, signals dated information, because the company has had no apparel operations since the spin-off.

Older directories and career guides still describe Sara Lee as an apparel employer because for decades it genuinely was one of the industry's largest. Treat such references as historical. Openings in underwear, activewear and hosiery design, development and sourcing are advertised by the brands' current owners, and applications should go to those companies' official careers pages rather than to any Sara Lee address.
