Ponte — short for ponte di roma — is a firm, stable double knit made by knitting two layers of jersey together so the fabric is smooth on both faces and barely curls at the edges. Usually a blend of polyester, rayon, and elastane (or a cotton-rich mix), ponte has gentle two-way stretch, real body, and a clean matte surface. It is the knit that acts like a woven: structured enough for trousers and blazers, comfortable enough to wear all day.
How Ponte Is Knitted
Ponte is produced on double-knit (interlock-type) machines that knit two beds of needles at once, locking the two faces together. That construction is why ponte is thicker and far more stable than single jersey: it does not roll at cut edges, it resists bagging at knees and seats, and its recovery snaps it back to shape.
Classic ponte di roma uses a repeating rib-crossing structure that gives the surface a very fine, almost invisible texture. Weights run from dress weight to heavy trouser weight; check the elastane content — 2–5% is typical and is what provides the wearing ease.
Where Ponte Is Used
- Trousers and leggings — ponte pants are the category the fabric made famous: pull-on, structured, opaque.
- Blazers and jackets — unlined ponte blazers give tailoring without stiffness.
- Dresses and skirts — sheath and fit-and-flare styles that skim rather than cling.
- Travel clothing — ponte resists wrinkles and packs flat.
Care of Ponte
Most ponte machine washes cold on a gentle cycle and tumble dries low or line dries. Turn garments inside out to protect the smooth face from abrasion, and avoid high heat, which degrades elastane over time. Ponte needs little or no ironing; a cool iron or light steam handles travel creases.

FAQs
- What does ponte di roma mean?
- It is Italian for 'bridge of Rome', a name given to this double-knit structure. In shops it is shortened to ponte.
- Is ponte see-through?
- No — ponte is one of the most opaque knits, which is why it is used for leggings and trousers worn as pants.
- Does ponte pill?
- Rayon-rich pontes can pill with abrasion over time. Polyester-rich and nylon-faced pontes resist pilling better; washing inside out helps all types.
