Aasra Exports

Aasra is a midsize company specializing in bed and table linen. Established in 1980, the company has the capacity to produce 228,000 pieces a year. It specializes in patchwork, embroidery, and hand- and machine-quilting.

The supplier exports its entire output, mainly to the US and the EU. ODM orders take up 100 percent of exports. Main buyers are Marks & Spencer, Williams-Sonoma, Dillard's, Linen Source, Europa, Tradition, and Bloomingdale's.

In 2005, total sales are expected to grow 25 percent to US$6 million, primarily driven by exports to the US.

Aasra plans to start manufacturing towels in the near future. It is already in the process of setting up a new factory for the purpose.

Products

The company produces quilted bedspreads and coverlets, cushion sets, shams, bed skirts, curtains, bedsheets, tablemats, napkins, runners, and tablecloths. It specializes in patchwork, embroidery, and hand and machine quilting. While bedspread quilting is done by hand, table cover quilting is done by machine.

Prices of bed linen range from US$30 to US$120. Available in queen and king sizes, bed linen is made of 100 percent cotton in 40s poplin, polyester silk, 20s sheeting material and 34 sheeting material. Most quilted bedspreads have printed 40s poplin covers and 2mm thick foam filling. The top of the bedspread cover has more intricate patterns than the lower portion.

Priced from US$13 to US$20, table covers come in square and round with dimensions of 70x70, 70x90, 70x108 and 90x90 inches. These are made of 40s poplin and can be quilted. Some table linen is printed in two or more colors. Light-colored fabric is easier to print on and thus costs less than dark colored fabric. Multicolored designs are more expensive than single-colored models.

India is among the world's top three suppliers of home textile products. Almost 80% of its US$1.2 billion worth of exports annually are shipped to the US and the EU.

Growth is forecast to be robust, especially as Western customers come to appreciate traditional Indian specializations in embellishments such as embroidery and patchwork.

However, the market is also becoming more competitive, with companies establishing in-house dyeing facilities, adding high-speed looms and taking other steps to stay ahead.

With profiles of 95 key manufacturers, as well as a complete overview of the industry, this report will help you source home textiles easily and cost effectively from India.
