How to Measure Belt Size

Belt size is measured to the middle hole - here is how to get it from your waist or from a belt you own.

A belt size is not the belt's full length. It is the distance from the base of the buckle to the middle hole of the strap - the hole you are expected to use - which is why the number on a belt is always a few inches shorter than the belt itself. Once you know that, sizing is simple: there are two reliable ways in, from a belt that already fits you or from your waist size.

The existing-belt method is the most accurate because it copies a fit you already like. The waist method works when you have no belt to measure: buy two inches up from your pants size. Both are explained below, with the exceptions - jeans worn low, belts worn at the hip, and women's belts sized by letter - that change the answer.

Method 1: Measure a Belt You Own

Lay the belt flat and straight on a table, without stretching it. Measure from the point where the strap meets the buckle - the base of the buckle bar, not the tip of the buckle frame - along the strap to the middle hole. That distance, in inches, is your belt size. If you habitually use a different hole, measure to that hole instead; the middle hole is the standard because it leaves room to adjust in both directions.

Do not measure the belt end to end. The buckle and the strap tip beyond the last hole add several inches that have nothing to do with fit, and end-to-end measurement is the most common reason an online belt order arrives two sizes too big.

Method 2: From Your Waist or Pants Size

If you have no belt to measure, use your pants size and add two inches: a 34-inch pants waist takes a 36-inch belt. The addition covers the thickness of the pants worn under the belt and puts the buckle at the middle hole. Measure your actual waist with a tape - over the pants, at the height where the belt will sit - if your pants size and your tape size disagree, and trust the tape.

Pants size is itself an imperfect input - vanity sizing means a labeled 34 may measure 36 - which is why the tape beats the label whenever they differ. The same caution applies across the clothing size conversion chart: numbers on labels are claims, tape measurements are facts.

Exceptions: Jeans, Hips and Dress Belts

For the garments belts are worn with, the men's belts guide and women's belts guide cover styles, widths and materials.

Common Questions

Is belt size the same as pants size?
No. Belt size is normally two inches larger than pants size, because belt size is measured to the middle hole of the strap while the belt has to wrap around the pants themselves. A 34-inch waist takes a 36-inch belt.
Why is my belt longer than its size says?
Because the size measures only from the buckle base to the middle hole. The buckle itself and the strap beyond the holes add several inches of total length that are not counted in the size.
What if I am between belt sizes?
Choose the larger size. You will buckle it on a hole closer to the tip, the strap end stays long enough to reach the loop, and a leather shop can punch an extra hole if needed. A too-small belt on its last hole looks and feels strained.
How do I measure for a belt worn with jeans?
Measure around your body over the jeans at the height the belt will actually sit - usually lower than the natural waist. Jeans belts are often worn at the hips, and that lower position is wider, so it frequently needs one size more than a dress belt.
