maurices was founded in 1931 by E. Maurice Labovitz and and was later purchased by Dress Barn, Inc.  Dress Barn was purchased by Ascena Retail Group.  maurices home office is located in Duluth, Minnesota, the site of its very first store.

In March 2019, OpCapita (European private equity firm) announced that it is picking up a majority stake in the women’s apparel retailer headquartered on Superior Street, ending 14 years of ownership by Ascena Retail Group.
