Montecristi, Cuenca and the Question of Grade

Every Panama hat is a weave before it is a shape. Montecristi hats carry the finest, tightest weave and the highest prices; Cuenca hats are woven a grade looser, blocked more firmly, and make excellent everyday summer hats at a fraction of the cost. Within each origin, grade is judged by rows of weave per inch and by evenness - no thick or discolored straws breaking the surface. Planete Panama's range, drawn from both Montecristi and Cuenca, shows the two side by side. A hat that will be worn daily often serves its owner better in a good Cuenca grade than in a delicate superfine Montecristi saved for best.

Blocking, Bands and Everyday Care

After weaving, the hat body is blocked into its shape - fedora pinch, wide sun brim or classic optimo ridge - and finished with a sweatband and an outer ribbon, traditionally black grosgrain. Handle a Panama by the brim, keep it dry, and wipe it with a soft, slightly damp cloth rather than soaking it. Store it supported so the brim does not warp.
