Guide to the J Companies

The six J companies are heavy with famous names. Jockey International, based in Kenosha, Wisconsin, is the oldest: founded as Coopers Inc. in 1876 as a hosiery business, it invented the first men's Y-Front brief in 1934 and became a recognised trademark in 120 countries for underwear, sleepwear and socks. Jos. A. Bank Clothiers, founded in 1905 and headquartered in Hampstead, Maryland near Baltimore, is the men's clothing retailer, with over 400 stores in 2008 selling suits, shirts, ties and sport coats in lines from Business Express to Signature Gold. Jones Apparel Group, a Fortune 500 designer, marketer and wholesaler headquartered in Bristol, Pennsylvania, owns brands including Anne Klein, Nine West, Gloria Vanderbilt and Jones New York, and bought and later sold Barneys New York.

The other three J companies are women's fashion names built on personality. JLo by Jennifer Lopez is the lifestyle brand from Jennifer Lopez, covering clothing, swimwear, fragrances, eyewear, jewelry, handbags, watches and footwear, licensed by the Warnaco Group. Jovovich-Hawk was the Los Angeles clothing line created in 2003 by models Milla Jovovich and Carmen Hawk, praised by Vogue, sold in over 50 stores, and closed in 2008 after collections for Mango and Target. Juicy Couture, created in 1994 by Gela Nash-Taylor and Pamela Skaist-Levy and later owned by Liz Claiborne, became famous for terrycloth and velour tracksuits sold in upscale department stores.

How These Definitions Are Organised

United States clothing companies are filed alphabetically by company name, one letter per index page, so a company can be found by its first letter even when its full history is unknown. Each definition is a concise profile rather than a full company history: founding facts, headquarters, products, brands and lines, ownership where it is notable, and the events that made the company worth defining. The J letter mixes very different lifespans — a company founded in 1876, a retailer founded in 1905, and a designer line that ran for five years — and the format records each on the same terms.

Readers who need more depth on a company can follow the path into the Apparel Search fashion company profiles in the names directory, where major companies carry fuller profiles. Companies change — they are acquired, renamed, relaunched or close — so a definition records the company as described at the time of writing, including dated facts such as store counts, acquisitions and closures with their years, so the record stays useful even after the company itself has moved on.
