Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota
The West North Central states are the western half of the Midwest: Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota. Seven states of plains, prairie and river cities, separated from the East North Central division by the Mississippi River, which marks the bulk of the boundary between them. Retail here serves distance — shoppers often travel between towns to shop — and weather that runs to genuine extremes, from northern-plains winters in the Dakotas and Minnesota to hot summers in Kansas and Missouri. Strong independent stores and regional chains anchor the division's towns. Choose a state below to open its clothing store guide.

The West North Central States form one of the nine geographic divisions within the United States that are officially recognized by the U.S. Census Bureau. Seven states compose the division: Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota, and it makes up the western half of the United States Census Bureau's larger region of the Midwest.

Where the East North Central division clusters around the Great Lakes, the West North Central spreads out. Minnesota pairs the Twin Cities' full retail scene with lake-country and northern towns; Missouri splits between St. Louis on the Mississippi and Kansas City on the Missouri River; Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska and the Dakotas run on a pattern of regional hubs and county-seat main streets, where one good clothing store serves a wide circle of communities. That pattern makes this division's state guides especially valuable: in a sparse retail landscape, knowing which town holds which store saves a long drive in the wrong direction.
No division asks more of a wardrobe. West North Central stores stock for winters that can drop far below zero in North Dakota and Minnesota and for summers that push past one hundred degrees in Kansas — sometimes with both kinds of clothing selling in the same month at opposite ends of the division. Workwear is a core category across the plains states, not a specialty: farm, ranch and trade clothing anchors many stores, with town and occasion clothing beside it. Follow the state links for the listings, and use the East North Central link on this page if your trip crosses the Mississippi — the river is the division line, but shoppers in border towns cross it constantly.

Stores are spread across plains and prairie communities, so a regional hub or county-seat store often serves shoppers from many surrounding towns.
