Medium wash denim has a versatile color that can be dressed up or down. Think of medium as being in the middle between light & dark in color. The indigo dye within the fabric creates a mid range color.
Although their are many, many variations we can categorize jeans and other types of denim clothing with three primary ranges. For example, we can describe jeans in the following manner.
- Light wash jeans
- Medium wash jeans
- Dark wash jeans
Mid wash or medium wash refers to the length of time that denim goes thru the washing cycle during manufacturing. Mid-wash refers to denim that has been washed for an extended period of time. The longer the denim is washed with water or other solutions the more of the blue dye lessens. A longer washing process can remove more of the indigo dye color.
The denim washing helps strengthen or lighten the color as well as texture & feel of the denim fabric. The denim washing process allows designers to get creative. The length of time, process, and what is utilized in the wash effects the characteristics of the fabric.
When thinking about denim pants, typical rule of thumb but not fully a law of the land.
- Light wash provides a more laid-back & casual vibe.
- Medium wash lies in the middle so it is versatile between dressy & casual.
- Dark wash are a bit more dressy. With that said, they are still jeans so they are not as dressy other types of slacks.
Medium wash is also on occassion referenced as medium rinse.
