It sounds like a contradiction until you handle the cloth. Flannel is brushed cotton — woven, then napped for softness — and neither the weaving nor the brushing is fixed at winter strength. Warm-Weather Styles

The classic short-sleeve button-front keeps the pointed collar, chest pocket and shirttail hem of the standard shirt, simply with the sleeves cut short — the version that works in casual offices. Sleeve finish changes the polish level. A simple hemmed sleeve is sportiest; a cuffed or banded sleeve looks deliberate; a slight puff or cap sleeve moves the shirt toward blouse territory. Warm-weather flannel is woven lighter and brushed less. Fit and Choosing

Short sleeves expose fit mistakes that long sleeves hide. The shoulder seam should sit at the shoulder point, because a dropped shoulder plus a short sleeve reads sloppy rather than relaxed. The sleeve opening should skim the arm with a finger or two of ease — tight enough to look tailored, loose enough to move — and sleeve length around mid-bicep suits most wearers; very long short sleeves that reach the elbow shorten the arm visually unless the shirt is deliberately oversized.

Body fit follows your styling plan. A closer fit tucks neatly into shorts and skirts; a relaxed fit wears open over tees and swimwear as a light cover layer. Because the cloth is light, white and pale colours can be sheer in bright light — hold the shirt up in the shop and choose your underlayer accordingly. Layering and Care

The shirt's second job is as a layer. Open over a vest top or tee it is a summer evening cover-up with more structure than a cardigan; under a lightweight blazer or denim jacket the short sleeves eliminate bunching at the cuff. Tied at the waist over a plain dress it adds the soft texture contrast that makes simple outfits interesting, and in early autumn it slides under a sleeveless jumper or gilet without sleeve bulk.

Care is the easiest in the flannel family. Wash cool to warm, gentle cycle, inside out to protect the light nap, and line dry or tumble low — the thinner cloth dries quickly and irons easily with a warm iron. Avoid hot washes, which shrink lightweight cotton proportionally more than heavy cloth, and store on hangers rather than folded in a hot drawer. Looked after that simply, a short sleeve flannel earns its place from the first warm weekend to the last.
