Clothing Definitions — definitions of garments and clothing terms from Apparel Search
A crossbody bag is a bag carried on a strap that crosses the body diagonally, from one shoulder to the opposite hip. The term names the carry rather than the shape of the bag. This page defines crossbody, explains the strap measurements behind it, and separates it from the shoulder bag and the messenger bag.
A crossbody bag is a handbag or other bag fitted with a strap long enough for the bag to be worn across the body: the strap rests on one shoulder, crosses the chest and back diagonally, and the bag sits at or near the opposite hip. Almost any bag shape — a flap bag, a saddle bag, a bucket bag, a camera bag, a small tote — can be a crossbody bag if its strap is long enough, which is why retailers treat crossbody as a category of its own, separate from the shape categories.
The deciding measurement is the strap drop, the distance from the top of the strap to the top of the bag. Crossbody straps run roughly 20 to 26 inches of drop, against about 9 to 12 inches for a shoulder bag's strap, and are usually adjustable so the wearer can set the bag at the waist, the hip or below it. A diagonal strap cannot slip off the shoulder and spreads the load across the torso; both properties come from the bag's working ancestors — the courier's satchel, the postman's bag and the military dispatch case — whose direct modern descendant is the messenger bag, a large, soft crossbody bag with a broad flap.
The three terms are often blurred in shop listings. A shoulder bag is carried on one shoulder, the bag tucked under the arm on a short strap. A crossbody bag is carried across the torso on a long strap, whatever its shape. A messenger bag is a specific shape — broad, soft and flap-fronted — that is almost always carried crossbody. A convertible bag supplied with both a short and a long strap can be all three at once, and is commonly listed under each term in turn. The product side of the category, including sizes and closures, is covered in the Fashion Influence guide to crossbody bags.
A bag worn on a strap that crosses the body diagonally, from one shoulder to the opposite hip. The word describes the carry, not the shape of the bag.
Typically a drop of about 20 to 26 inches, and usually adjustable by buckle or slider. A shoulder bag's strap, by contrast, drops about 9 to 12 inches.
In carry, yes — messenger bags are worn across the body. But messenger names a shape (large, soft, flap-fronted, descended from courier bags), while crossbody names only the way a bag is worn.
