Crossbody Bags

Fashion Influence — how style shapes, and is shaped by, the people who wear it

A crossbody bag is defined by how it is worn: on a long strap that crosses the body diagonally, leaving both hands free. This guide covers the style's working-bag origins, how strap length decides where the bag sits, the sizes it comes in, and how it differs from the shoulder bag it is so often confused with.

Crossbody Bags

A crossbody bag is a handbag carried on a strap long enough to pass over one shoulder and across the torso, so the bag rests on or near the opposite hip. Crossbody describes a carry, not a shape: flap bags, saddle bags, bucket bags and even small totes are all made in crossbody versions, and any bag with a strap drop of roughly 20 inches or more can be worn this way. Retailers list crossbody as a category of its own because shoppers choose it first — before shape, before material — when the point of the bag is to be carried hands-free.

Crossbody Bags

The arrangement is older than fashion. Couriers, postmen and soldiers carried their bags across the body because a diagonal strap cannot slip off the shoulder and keeps a load steady while walking or riding; the messenger bag is the direct descendant of those working bags. Women's fashion adopted the carry in the 1970s, as everyday dress turned casual and the structured handbag, carried in the hand or crooked on an elbow, gave way to softer bags worn on the body. The mobile phone completed the takeover: a crossbody bag holds a phone against the hip, in reach and out of the way, and the small crossbody styles sized to a phone, cards and keys are now among the most common bags sold anywhere.

Strap Length and Fit

The strap is the whole design. Its working measurement is the drop — the distance from the top of the strap to the top of the bag — and on crossbody bags that runs from about 20 to 26 inches, against 9 to 12 inches on a shoulder bag. Most crossbody straps adjust with a buckle or a slider, because the right drop depends on the wearer's height and on whether the bag is wanted at the waist, at the hip or below it. Worn toward the front of the body, the bag is at its most secure — the reason the crossbody is the standard travel bag, usually with a zip closure under its flap or across its top. Wide fabric straps, sometimes patterned and sold separately as guitar straps, spread the weight of a heavier bag and have become a styling feature in their own right; a thin chain strap marks the dressier, evening end of the category.

Sizes and Closures

Sizes run in three rough bands. Phone bags and mini crossbody bags carry a phone, cards and little else, and replace a wallet for many wearers. The classic everyday crossbody is a medium flap or zip-top bag that takes a wallet, phone, keys, glasses case and a paperback. Large crossbody bags shade into messenger bags and crossbody totes, with room for a tablet or a change of shoes. Closures follow the size: zips for security on travel and everyday bags, flaps with magnetic or turnlock clasps on the classic styles, snap or open tops only on the smallest. Many bags hedge the choice entirely and ship with two straps — a short one for the shoulder and a long one for crossbody wear — which is why the same design may be listed in both categories at once.

Within this site's handbags family, the bags most often worn across the body are the baguette, the flap-front saddle bag and the drawstring bucket bag, and the full range of shapes is surveyed in the guide to the types of handbags. The dictionary side of the term is set out in the crossbody bag definition.

Common Questions

What is a crossbody bag?

A bag worn on a long strap that crosses the body diagonally from one shoulder to the opposite hip. The term describes the carry rather than the shape, so flap bags, saddle bags, bucket bags and zip-top bags are all sold as crossbody styles.

How long should a crossbody strap be?

Long enough for the bag to rest at or just above the hip — a strap drop of roughly 20 to 26 inches on most wearers. Adjustable straps are worth having, because the right length changes with height, coat thickness and where you like the bag to sit.

What is the difference between a crossbody bag and a shoulder bag?

Strap length and carry. A shoulder bag has a shorter strap and hangs from one shoulder under the arm; a crossbody bag's longer strap crosses the torso, which keeps both hands free and makes the bag harder to slip off.
