Dobby weave uses a dobby attachment to create small geometric patterns - dots, diamonds, and textures woven directly into the fabric.
How Dobby Works
A dobby attachment controls groups of warp yarns together (unlike jacquard, which controls each yarn individually). This limits patterns to small geometric repeats - dots, diamonds, stripes, small textures - but it's simpler, faster, and far cheaper than jacquard weaving. Modern dobby looms are electronically controlled, making pattern changes quick.
Common Dobby Fabrics
- Dobby shirting - the classic: subtle dot, diamond, and geometric patterns in dress shirts
- Pique - a dobby texture with a waffled surface, famous in polo shirts
- Waffle weave - a honeycomb dobby texture used in thermal knits and wovens
Dobby vs Jacquard
Think of it as a spectrum: dobby handles small repeats economically - the everyday patterned shirting of the world. Jacquard handles large, complex, pictorial patterns at premium cost. Most patterned fabrics you encounter daily are dobby; jacquard is reserved for statement pieces.
FAQs
- What does 'dobby' mean?
- Possibly from 'draw boy' - the assistant who pulled pattern cords on old looms before mechanisms replaced him.
- Is seersucker a dobby?
- Seersucker uses a related technique with differential warp tension to create its puckered stripes.
- Can you see dobby patterns easily?
- They're subtle - small geometrics visible up close, reading as texture from a distance.
