Small Bust Adjustment

Removing excess fullness so a smaller bust is shaped, not swamped.

Pattern front overlapped at the bust point to remove fullness, taped on paper

A small bust adjustment (SBA) is a pattern alteration that removes length and width over the bust for a wearer whose cup size is smaller than the pattern's drafted cup — usually a B. A smaller bust in an unadjusted pattern leaves fabric standing away from the chest, darts pointing at empty air and folds pooling above and below the bust. The SBA overlaps the front pattern through the bust point to take out exactly that excess, so the garment's shoulders, neck and waist keep their correct size while the bust shaping shrinks to match the body.

How an SBA Works

The same three slash lines used for a full bust adjustment are drawn through the bust point, but instead of spreading, the sections are overlapped by the amount to be removed. The side dart shrinks — sometimes to almost nothing — the front shortens slightly, and seams are re-trued. On princess lines, the front panel is overlapped along the style seam; on dartless patterns, overlapping simply narrows the front, and any remaining dart may be removed entirely and its shaping eased or transferred.

Getting the Diagnosis Right

Gaping at the front neckline or armhole is often blamed on a small bust when the real cause is a high round back or forward shoulders rotating the whole front. The SBA is correct only when the frame fits — shoulders, neck and back sit well — and the fabric surplus is centred on the bust itself. A muslin fitting shell settles the question before paper is cut.

The same overlap technique serves related corrections: lowering an apex that sits too high, narrowing a front that is wide only across the chest, or reducing a princess seam's curve. In every case the muslin decides the amount — the fitter pins a small horizontal fold through the apex on the body, measures it, and transfers half to each pattern edge or the whole to the centre panel as the style requires. Removing too much is as visible as removing too little: the chest looks pressed flat and the armholes begin to drag.

FAQs

Can a dart disappear completely after an SBA?
Yes. If the overlap removes the dart's whole intake, the remaining shaping can be eased or the dart eliminated — common for A-cup adjustments on simple styles.
Is a small bust adjustment just sewing a smaller size?
No. A smaller size shrinks the shoulders, neck and armhole as well. An SBA removes fullness only over the bust and keeps the frame that fits.
How is an SBA different from an FBA?
They are mirror images using the same slash lines: the FBA spreads the pattern open to add bust room; the SBA overlaps it to remove bust room.
