Forward Shoulder Adjustment

Moving the shoulder seam and sleeve to where rounded shoulders actually sit.

A forward shoulder adjustment is a pattern alteration for shoulders that roll forward of the standard position — common with rounded upper backs, desk posture and age. On an unadjusted garment the shoulder seam creeps behind the shoulder's actual ridge, sleeves twist, diagonal wrinkles point at the front armhole, and collars stand away at the back neck. The adjustment moves the shoulder seam — and with it the sleeve's balance — forward at the outer (armhole) end, so the seam sits on top of the shoulder where it belongs.

How the Adjustment Is Made

The shoulder point is shifted forward by the measured amount — often 1/4 to 5/8 inch (0.6–1.6 cm) — taking that wedge from the front armhole and adding it to the back, while the neck end of the seam usually stays put. The sleeve cap's notches and balance are re-marked to match, since the sleeve now hangs from a rotated armhole; on set-in sleeves the front notch moves forward with the seam. The armhole is re-blended and the seams walked again after the change.

What It Fixes

A correct forward shoulder alteration levels the hem's side hang, untwists sleeves so their crease falls over the thumb's line, removes the drag lines running into the front armhole and lets a collar settle against the neck. It is one of the highest-value fitting corrections on shirts, jackets and dresses, because the shoulder is the garment's hanger — every line below it depends on its position.

The amount is found on the body, not from a chart. With the shell on, the fitter marks the shoulder's highest ridge with tape and measures how far behind it the seam has settled; that distance is the shift. On shirts the same correction moves the yoke seam; on sleeveless styles it moves the armhole's shoulder point and re-shapes the front armhole curve. Because modern life — screens, steering wheels, desks — rounds shoulders forward, many fitters now treat a small forward shift as a standard starting alteration rather than an exception.

FAQs

How do I know my shoulders sit forward?
If shoulder seams consistently sit behind your shoulder ridge, sleeves spiral, and wrinkles point toward your front armholes, your shoulders are forward of the pattern standard.
Does moving the shoulder seam change the sleeve?
Yes. The sleeve hangs from the armhole, so its notches and balance marks are re-marked to match the shifted seam; otherwise the sleeve will twist.
Is a forward shoulder the same as a high round back?
No, though they often occur together. Forward shoulder moves the seam's outer end; a high round back adds length and a dart or seam shaping over the rounded upper back itself.
