A guide to Los Angeles runway shows and the fashion week seasons covered in this section for fashion editors, buyers and Los Angeles fashion followers.
Los Angeles is one of the world's fashion capitals, and its runway calendar is the subject of this section. From the first Mercedes-Benz sponsored season in April 2003 through the Smashbox Studios years that followed, Los Angeles Fashion Week gave West Coast designers a tent, a schedule and a national audience — and the coverage collected here follows the week season by season, show by show.
The season list above is the way into the archive. Each season has an overview page, and the seasons from April 2003, March 2004 and March 2005 go further: individual pages for the designer shows themselves, written by the West Coast editorial team that attended them. The October 2007 season is documented the other way around — in runway photographs, dozens per show, taken as the collections walked.

For decades Los Angeles dressed America without a fashion week to match its output: the city was the country's casualwear and denim engine, its garment district one of the largest in the nation, yet its designers showed in New York or not at all. The arrival of Mercedes-Benz sponsorship and the 7th on Fifth organization in 2003 changed the structure. White tents rose downtown, an official calendar formed, and Los Angeles designers — eveningwear specialists, denim labels, swimwear brands and avant-garde newcomers alike — had a home season twice a year.
The seasons in this section trace that experiment across five years. April 2003 was the benchmark: a fall week staged around The Standard hotel downtown, with shows spilling into hotel suites, galleries, a music school auditorium and a Chinatown courtyard. By March 2004 the official week had consolidated at Smashbox Studios in Culver City, where the March 2005 and the 2006 and 2007 seasons also played out — one venue, one tent complex, and a front row that mixed editors, buyers and the celebrity following Los Angeles designers cultivate.
Each season overview page works the same way: the setting and the story of the week first, then the list of shows covered, each linking to its own page. The April 2003 overview links seven designer reports, from San Paredes by Paul Magalad's courtyard presentation to Heatherette's camp finale. The March 2004 overview links nine — Petro Zillia, GenArt, Trina Turk, Frankie B., Shay Todd, Joe's Jeans, Louis Verdad, Tyler and the Mondrian Suites satellite shows. The March 2005 overview links the widest net of all: twenty shows and events, plus the off-runway Design Suites discoveries.
Two kinds of record survive, and the section keeps both. The 2003 to 2005 seasons survive in words — reviews that name the fabrics, the silhouettes, the front rows and the after-parties, written within days of the shows. The October 2007 season survives in pictures: runway photographs by the photographer Felix of LookBookLA, carried complete on each show's page, from Sha Dang's thirty-eight frames to Sterling Williams' fifty-one.
Read together, the season pages are a cross-section of the Los Angeles market in the mid-2000s: made-to-measure eveningwear from Eduardo Lucero, minimalist suiting from Peter Cohen, premium denim from Joe's Jeans and Frankie B., swimwear from Shay Todd, mid-century polish from Trina Turk, and the emerging-designer showcases — GenArt above all — that kept feeding new names into the calendar. It is also a record of how fashion weeks actually run: satellite shows at hotels, suite presentations for buyers, spa and beauty suites for the press, and sponsored lounges above the installation floor.
Start with a season overview for the story of a week, or go straight to a designer page for a single show. The wider Los Angeles fashion industry — its designers, its Fashion District and its business directory — is covered in the LA Fashion pages linked below.
