The Company Description of Its Time

This is a children's clothing profile kept as a dated historical record, and it is written here in strictly product terms: garments, sizes, fabrics and store formats, with no children pictured or described wearing anything. The historical record opens with the ending. On January 16, 2019 Gymboree Group Inc. announced it had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and planned to close all Gymboree and Crazy 8 stores and sell its Janie and Jack stores. The background given is that Gymboree Group is an American, San Francisco-based corporation operating a chain of over 1,200 specialty retail stores of children's apparel in the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada; Bain Capital acquired the company in 2010; it filed for bankruptcy in June 2017, reemerged in September 2017, and was then owned by a group of the historical record lenders.

The Store Brands as Recorded in 2011

Gymboree retail stores had been dressing children since 1986. The clothing and accessories were designed and crafted to let kids be kids, in the brand's phrase, with colourful, high-quality fabrics and detailed touches throughout, and coordinating accessories completing each outfit from head to toe. Sizes ran from newborn to 12 years. In 2011 Gymboree operated more than 630 stores in the U.S. and Canada, plus an online store. Gymboree Outlet offered the same quality and style at outlet prices, with approximately 140 outlet stores in 2011 at premier locations nationwide.

Janie and Jack shops offered classic children's clothing rich in fabric, design and detail for girls and boys up to size 8 online and up to size 6 in shops, with finely-crafted details such as hand-embroidery, hand-smocking and special prints lending themselves to timeless looks described as destined to be cherished heirlooms; there were approximately 120 shops in 2011, plus an online shop. Crazy 8, the newest addition to the family, offered kids' fashion at very low prices in sizes newborn to 14; the first Crazy 8 store opened in August 2007, and more than 80 stores operated in 2011, with an online store as well.
