Handbags are categorised first by how they are carried. Shoulder bags hang from a strap on one shoulder; hand-held bags have short handles and are carried in the hand or over the forearm, as the name handbag records; cross-body bags use a long strap worn diagonally so the bag rests at the hip and the hands stay free; and clutch bags have no strap at all and are held in the hand, usually as smaller evening bags. Shape gives the second set of categories: the tote, an open-topped bag with two handles; the satchel, a structured bag with a flap; the hobo, a soft, slouching crescent shape; and the bucket and backpack forms. A single bag can belong to several categories at once, which is why retailers sort handbags by carrying method, size and occasion as well as by shape.
Materials and construction decide price and use. Leather is the traditional handbag material, valued because it withstands daily carrying and improves with wear; fabric bags in canvas and nylon are lighter and washable, and nylon in particular is used for practical everyday and travel bags. Closures run from zips and flap-and-clasp fastenings to open tops with a magnetic catch, and interiors are usually lined and divided so the contents the bag exists to carry — purse, keys, make-up, files, diaries and phone — can be found quickly. In that sense the handbag is defined less by any single shape than by its job: a personal carrying accessory, larger than a coin purse, sized for the objects its owner needs through the day.
