Complement, Highlight, Disguise

An accessory is defined by its relationship to clothing: it is not the outfit, but it decides how the outfit reads. Three functions are named. Accessories complement fashion, completing a look the clothes alone leave unfinished. They highlight a dress or apparel, drawing the eye to a garment's best feature — a belt that shows a waist, a necklace that frames a neckline. And they can hide a weakness of a dress, redirecting attention away from a poor fit or a plain fabric toward a stronger element. Those three functions explain the accessory's economic magic. Clothing is expensive and slow to replace; accessories are comparatively cheap and instant. The same dress with different shoes, bag and jewelry becomes a different outfit, which is why accessories change an entire look and why the category, rather than any single garment, is where most people's fashion experimentation actually happens.

A Category That Contains Almost Everything

The list of accessories is remarkable for its range. It runs from the purely decorative — tiaras, fans, pageant sashes, hair bows — through the social — bridal accessories, pocket squares, cufflinks, cummerbunds, ties — to the frankly practical: earmuffs, mittens, umbrellas, wallets and even reflective armbands. Head, neck, ears, hands, waist, feet and the carried hand are all covered: hats, scarves, shawls, stoles and foulards; gloves and mittens; belts, suspenders and pareos; capes, cloaks and ponchos; bags, handbags, purses and wallets; sunglasses; and costume jewelry from earrings to beaded necklaces. What unifies this miscellany is removability and emphasis. An accessory is the part of an outfit that can be taken off, swapped or added last, and it is usually the part worn closest to the points the eye visits first — the face, the hands, the waist. That is why a list that includes both a tiara and a reflective armband is coherent: both are additions to clothing that change how the wearer is seen, one for ceremony and one for safety, each doing the accessory's work of altering the message of the clothes beneath.

Where Trends Are Set

Trends are continuously set by adding accessories to different outfits — belts are the given example, and the mechanism generalises. A garment trend requires factories, seasons and fit; an accessory trend requires only that enough visible people add the same item. The 1980s leg warmer, named in the definition, is the perfect case: a knitted tube borrowed from dancers' warm-up wear, worn over leggings and jeans by millions who never took a dance class, purely because it signalled the decade's look at almost no cost. Accessories are therefore fashion's fastest-moving layer and its most democratic one. A handbag, a scarf or a pair of sunglasses lets a wearer join a trend this week, adjust it to their own clothes, and abandon it next season without discarding a wardrobe. Designers and retailers understand this, which is why accessories and costume jewelry carry so much of the industry's branding: the logo is often clearest, and the price most reachable, on the item that is not the clothes at all.
