Jacquard elastic is a wide woven elastic whose pattern — a logo, brand name, stripe, or motif — is woven directly into the band on a jacquard loom, not printed or embroidered on afterwards. The elastic yarns are woven in as the band is made, so the design is part of the structure and stretches with it. It is the elastic of exposed waistbands: underwear, boxer briefs, and sportswear, plus straps and suspenders.
How to Recognise Jacquard Elastic
Turn the band over and stretch it. On jacquard elastic the pattern shows on both faces, changes texture rather than colour alone, and stays in register as the band stretches — because the design is the weave itself. A printed elastic, by contrast, carries its design on the surface of a plain band, and the print can crack or fade with wear and washing.
- Jacquard elastic — pattern or lettering woven in during weaving; firm, wide, and stable.
- Plain woven elastic — the same firm construction with no pattern; used inside casings where it will not be seen.
- Knitted elastic — softer and lighter, often used in waist casings; it does not narrow as much when stretched.
- Braided elastic — narrow, ribbed, and the cheapest; it narrows noticeably when stretched and suits light casings.
Where Jacquard Elastic Is Used
Jacquard elastic is chosen when the elastic itself will be seen. Underwear makers weave the brand name into the exposed waistband of briefs and boxer briefs, where the woven lettering works as permanent branding that cannot peel or wash off. Sportswear uses patterned bands on shorts, leggings, and sports bras, and the same woven construction makes straps for bags and braces — suspenders — where a logo or stripe runs the full length of the strap.
Widths are wider than casing elastics, commonly around 25 to 50 millimetres for waistbands, and the band is usually sewn directly to the garment rather than threaded through a casing.
FAQs
- Is jacquard elastic printed with its pattern?
- No. The pattern is woven into the band on a jacquard loom as the elastic is made, so it runs through the structure and shows on both faces. It cannot crack, peel, or fade the way a surface print on plain elastic can.
- What is jacquard elastic used for?
- Mainly exposed waistbands on underwear and boxer briefs, sportswear waistbands and straps, and suspenders — anywhere the elastic is meant to be seen and a woven-in logo or pattern is wanted.
- What is the difference between jacquard elastic and plain woven elastic?
- The construction is similar — both are firm, wide, woven bands — but jacquard elastic has a pattern or lettering woven in on a jacquard loom, while plain woven elastic is unpatterned and is usually hidden inside a casing.
