When applied to fabric, the term sheer refers to semi-transparent and flimsy cloth.
It is usually a very thin knit and is used to make tights and stockings. It is also used for effect in dancewear and lingerie.

Shearing should not be confused with Sheer. Two totally different issues. Both of which are relevant to fashion.
