Production Job Descriptions — Letter L

Production, sourcing and manufacturing roles from A to Z — the L page of the category index

This is the L page of the Production and Sourcing category index, which files the category's role descriptions alphabetically by job title. Two production roles begin with L, and they form a natural pair: the two different crafts, knitting and weaving, by which lace is made. Each role below links to its full description.

The Two L Roles

Lace Knitting Manager — The knitting manager runs warp-knitting machines, above all the Raschel, where yarns are looped into a ground while pattern bars lay in the design, producing elastic and rigid laces, edgings and allovers at full fabric width.

Lace Weaving Manager — The weaving manager runs the looms, where warp and weft yarns are interlaced thread by thread — a slower making that produces firmer, more dimensional lace for bridal, lingerie and occasionwear.

Read together, the two pages explain a distinction the whole lace trade is organised around: the same word, lace, covers two structures, two machine families and two separate management crafts, and the descriptions keep them carefully apart.

How the Production Category Is Organised

Production and Sourcing covers the making side of fashion: developing and engineering styles, pattern cutting by hand and computer, colour work in laboratories and dye houses, factory management, quality control and sourcing. Its descriptions sit across sixteen letters — A, C, D, E, F, G, I, L, M, O, P, Q, S, T, V and W in the bar above — fullest at A and F, with eight roles each.
