The Company Description of Its Time

Hurley's history, as recorded, traces its roots back to the surf industry in Southern California in the late 1970s. Hurley Surfboards was established in Costa Mesa in 1979, and into the early 1980s it was excelling as a company, with Bob Hurley shaping surfboards for many of the best surfers in the world. This rebuild discusses the brand's swimwear and surf clothing strictly as products - boardshorts, fabrics, cuts and apparel categories - which is how the directory covers swimwear for women, men and kids alike. The routes include the directory's men's, women's and kids' swimwear guides and its men's and women's swimwear store pages, plus the Hurley brand pages for women, men and kids in the clothes guide.

A Surfboard Name That Became an Apparel Brand

That transition - boards first, clothing second - explains Hurley's place in this directory. Surf brands are filed here because their boardshorts, tees and swimwear are apparel, and Hurley's original routes map exactly that territory: swimwear guides for all three audiences, swimwear retail pages, a men's novelty T-shirts guide, and the three audience brand pages. The historical record's 2009 photograph of a Hurley shirt is carried by reference in the gallery on this page. No founding claim is made here for the apparel company beyond what the historical record states: the surfboards date, the Billabong USA licence, and the mid-1980s momentum are the record, and later corporate history is not added.

Comparison sharpens the profile. Helly Hansen, filed beside Hurley in this letter, also began with water - a Norwegian sea captain's oilskins in 1877 - but grew into technical sailing and ski professionalism, while Hurley grew from Costa Mesa surf culture into youth apparel. Both pages show the sea producing clothing companies by opposite routes: protection against the ocean in one, participation in it in the other. Reading the two together is the fastest way to understand why a names directory groups by letter rather than by trade - the letter collects the stories, and the reader supplies the contrasts.
