How to Style: Outfit & Styling Guides

Fit rules and outfit formulas for the jeans, dresses, knitwear, tailoring and shoes people actually search for.

A wardrobe rail of styled clothing — jeans, a blazer, a satin skirt and knitwear — with shoes arranged below

The How to Style guides answer the question shoppers type into a search box: I own this — how do I wear it? Each guide takes one garment or shoe and works through the fit and proportion rules first, because most styling problems are really fit problems, then builds complete outfit formulas around it — what to wear on the other half of the body, which shoes finish the look, and how the same piece changes between work, weekends and evenings. Seasonal notes cover the swaps that keep the piece working all year, from linen and sandals in summer to knitwear, boots and coats in winter.

Every guide also links sideways to the Apparel Search clothes guide for that garment, where the cuts, fabrics and types are explained in depth — the styling guide shows how to wear the piece, the clothes guide explains what the piece is. If you are here on business rather than as a shopper, the sister library is the How To Guides for the Fashion Industry: starting a clothing line, finding factories, tech packs, costing and production.

The Styling Guides

Start With the Pieces You Own

The fastest way to use this series is to start from your own wardrobe rather than from a shopping list. Pick the piece you wear least because it never looks right — wide-leg jeans that swamp you, a satin skirt that feels too dressy, a blazer that reads as office-only — and open its guide. Usually one proportion change fixes it: a shorter or tucked top over wide legs, knitwear instead of silk against satin, softer shoes under tailoring. The formulas are built from ordinary clothes, and each guide's seasonal section shows how the same anchor piece survives a temperature change with different layers and footwear. Work through two or three guides and the rest of the wardrobe starts combining on its own.

Both how-to libraries sit under the Fashion How-To Guides page, which explains which section fits which question.

Common Questions

What do these styling guides cover?
Outfit formulas for the specific clothes people search for most — jeans fits, denim dresses and shirts, satin skirts, slip dresses, blazers, cardigans, loafers and ballet flats. Each guide starts with fit and proportion rules, then gives complete outfits by occasion and season.
Where can I find guides to the garments themselves?
Every styling guide links to the Apparel Search clothes guide for that garment — the women's and men's guides where both exist — which covers the cuts, fabrics, types and terminology behind the piece being styled.
I run a fashion business — are these the guides for me?
Probably not. These guides are written for shoppers and wardrobes. The business library — starting a clothing line, finding a manufacturer, tech packs, costing and production — is the How To Guides for the Fashion Industry, linked from this page.
