Women's Golf Shirts Guide

If the golf dress code has a uniform, it is the golf shirt. Most courses that regulate dress at all regulate this: a top with a collar, or an approved mock collar, in place of the t-shirts and gym tops that stay in the car park. The golf shirt guide is therefore part style guide and part rule book — how to satisfy the strictest pro shop while wearing the most technical top you own.

The Collar Rule and Its Exceptions

The classic is the polo shirt: a soft collar, a two-to-four-button placket, and sleeves to at least mid-bicep in traditional cuts. The mock-neck — a short stand collar borrowed from tour players — passes at most clubs that accept modern tour dress, but it is the style most likely to be questioned at old-school private clubs, so a true polo is the safe traveller.

Sleeveless golf shirts are the warm-weather answer and are widely accepted provided they keep the collar; the sleeveless top without one is the style that draws comment. When in doubt, the rule of the wardrobe applies: collar first, sleeve length second.

Performance Fabrics

The modern golf shirt is knitted, not woven: polyester or nylon with elastane, engineered to wick sweat away from the skin, dry between holes, and stretch through the backswing without pulling at the placket. Mesh panels under the arms and across the shoulder blades dump heat, and many shirts carry a UPF rating — worth having in a garment worn through the middle of a sunny day.

Cotton piqué, the original polo fabric, still exists in casual ranges and looks the most traditional, but it holds sweat, wrinkles in the travel bag, and stays damp through the back nine. For a playing shirt, the synthetic wins on the course and loses only at the most formal clubhouse lunch.

Fit Through the Swing

A golf shirt is fitted standing at address and tested at the top of the backswing. It needs length to stay tucked (or a deliberate, neat untucked cut where the club allows it), room across the shoulders, and a collar that lies flat after a full turn. Sleeves that ride up and bind the bicep will be tugged at all round.

Women's cuts divide into classic (straighter, longer, the most code-proof), fitted (shaped at the waist, the current fashion) and relaxed warm-weather styles. Try the size on with the bottoms you will pair it with — the shirt's job includes staying correct with the shorts or skort at their approved length.

Building the Shirt Drawer

Two or three polos in rotation cover a weekly golfer: white or navy for strict clubs and matches, a colour or print for the relaxed home course, and a long-sleeve or quarter-zip top for the shoulder seasons. Prints and contrast collars are where women's golf fashion concentrates, since the silhouette itself is fixed by etiquette.

Wash performance knits cool, skip softener (it coats the wicking finish), and dry flat or on a hanger to keep the collar's shape. A collar that curls is what dates a golf shirt fastest.

Long Sleeves, Layers and Cold Mornings

The golf shirt family extends past the short-sleeve polo. Long-sleeve golf tops and quarter-zip pullovers carry the same collar logic into cold weather, usually as a layer over the polo rather than a replacement for it, so the outfit stays code-correct as layers come off through the round. Sleeveless-with-collar styles sit at the other extreme for high summer. When you layer, keep the collar of the shirt visible above the layer — it is the part the dress code is looking at. Base layers worn under a polo should be golf-specific where possible: smooth, thin and without the branding bands that read as gym wear through a light knit.
