Cushioned bras put padding where traditional bras put pressure: gel or foam cushioning inside the straps, along the underband, and sometimes at the wire casing. The cups themselves may be lightly lined or unlined — the "cushion" is about comfort engineering, not push-up.
This style exists for everyone who likes the support of an underwire or structured bra but hates the digging. Fuller busts benefit most, since strap pressure scales with weight, but anyone with sensitive shoulders or a low tolerance for hardware will notice the difference immediately. They are excellent daily wear bras for office life and long days on your feet.
Press the strap padding — quality cushioning springs back; cheap foam stays dented. Make sure the cushioning does not add so much bulk that straps slide off narrower shoulders. The underwire casing should be fully wrapped in soft fabric with no wire ends poking through (a common failure point in bargain bras). As always, the band does the supporting: cushioned straps cannot compensate for a band two sizes too big.
Cushioning compresses with washing, so hand-wash and rotate. When straps stop springing back or the band curls, the comfort engineering is done — replace the bra even if the cups look fine.
