Underwire bras use a flexible metal or plastic wire sewn into the bottom of each cup to lift, separate, and anchor the bust. It is the oldest modern bra technology and still the best at creating defined shape and serious support.
Underwire is the right call when you want maximum lift and separation: structured workwear, fitted dresses, larger busts that need real engineering, and anyone whose natural shape benefits from definition. A properly fitted underwire should be unnoticeable — if you are aware of the wire, something is wrong. Common culprits: band too loose (wire rides up), cup too small (wire sits on tissue instead of the ribcage), or a wire shape mismatched to your root.
The wire should encircle your breast tissue completely, sitting flat against your ribcage at the center and sides, with no tissue escaping under your arms. The center gore tacks flat for most shapes (very close-set busts excepted). If the wire pokes, check for a broken casing first — then check your size, because poking wires are usually a fit symptom, not a quality flaw.
Always use a wash bag: machine agitation is how wires escape and destroy both the bra and the machine. Replace bras when wires warp — a bent wire never sits right again.
