Padded bras add graduated foam or fiberfill inside the cups — a little at the bottom, more as you go — to enhance shape and add up to a cup size of volume. This is distinct from push-up bras (which lift aggressively) and from light foam lining (which only smooths).
Padded bras serve two masters: modesty plus shape. They prevent show-through, create a rounded profile, and add fullness where wanted — popular for evening wear, special occasions, and anyone who likes a little more curve in fitted tops. They are not ideal under very tight clothing if the padding edge shows, nor for those who prefer a natural profile.
Padding comes in light, medium, and "add-a-size" — be honest about which you want, because the mirror does not lie and an unnatural jump looks less good than you think. Graduated padding (thicker at the bottom) looks more natural than uniform thick pads. Removable pads let you customize and make washing easier, but they shift and bunch — sewn-in padding stays put.
Padding hides fit problems, so be extra careful: the band still must anchor, and the top edge must not gap. If the cups look great standing still but shift when you move, the band is too loose — padding cannot fix a foundation problem.
