Racerback bras route the straps in a Y or T between the shoulder blades instead of straight over the shoulders. The design keeps straps from slipping, centers the pull, and stays invisible under racerback tops, tanks, and athletic wear.
This is the sports-bra-adjacent everyday bra: great for active days, under tanks, and for narrow-shouldered wearers plagued by slipping straps. Many racerbacks are convertible from standard bras via a J-hook, which means you may already own one without knowing it. Dedicated racerbacks usually offer more support than converted ones, since the whole bra is patterned for the strap geometry.
The central strap junction can irritate between the shoulder blades, especially with heavy busts — look for padded or wide junctions. Racerbacks also tend to pull the bust slightly together (less separation), which some love and some do not. If you need serious separation for tailored blouses, a standard strap bra may serve better.
A J-hook converter on your regular bra works in a pinch, but the strap angle changes the fit slightly. If you live in racerback tops, invest in at least one bra designed as a racerback from the start.
