Seventeen Brands, From Couture to Clogs

Start with the houses that changed what women wear. Chanel, Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel's house, replaced the opulent, constrictive 19th-century wardrobe with blouses, suits, trousers and simple jewellery. Carhartt has made rugged work clothes since 1889, still family-owned by Hamilton Carhartt's descendants, and its women's range is the work line itself cut for women. Columbia, born in Portland, Oregon and led for over 40 years by Chairman Gert Boyle, promises to keep women warm, dry, cool and protected across ski, trail, water and snow. Champion dresses the training hour - wicking tees, tights and sports bras matched to impact. Converse, founded in 1908 and a Nike subsidiary since 2003, sells the basketball shoe the world adopted as its own. Cole Haan, resolving since 1928 to make good goods and nothing but good goods, passed from Nike to Apax Partners for $570 million in 2012.
