Welcome to the D section of the Men's Fashion Brands directory. In this area of the fashion brand directory you will find men's fashion brands from leading apparel companies and fashion designers that begin with the letter D: five brand profiles in all, gathered in the grid below - Dickies, Diesel, DKNY, Dockers and Duofold. D is the directory's working-and-denim letter: the largest workwear manufacturer in the world and the inventor of the base layer share it with an Italian jeans house, a New York fashion house and the khaki brand that dressed the business casual office.
If you know of an important men's clothing brand that begins with the letter D and is not listed in this section, please let us know. If you prefer to search by clothing category and not by a specific clothing brand, you are welcome to try our Clothes Guide; and if you are specifically looking to review luxury fashion, you can try the Fashion Brand Directory. The A-to-Z letter links ride in this page's alphabet bar, exactly as the directory has always laid them out.
Two of the five carry founding stories from the first years of the twentieth century. Duofold is the oldest claim: in 1906 Beecher Crouse's balance of the comfort of cotton and the warmth of wool created the brand and the base layer category with it; the brand later passed from Dawson International to the Sara Lee Corporation in 1999 for 95.7 million dollars and into Hanesbrands at the 2006 spin-off, and is now offered as Duofold by Champion. Dickies follows in 1922: Williamson-Dickie Mfg. Co. grew from a small bib overall company into the largest workwear manufacturer in the world, sold in every state in the U.S., its work pants, work shirts and denim jeans standing for quality, toughness and pride since its beginnings.
The other three are children of the 1980s and of denim's two homes. Diesel, Diesel S.p.A. of Breganze, Italy, took its modern form when Renzo Rosso - stitching jeans at fifteen - bought a 40 percent holding in Moltex that became Diesel, taking sole ownership in 1985; denim remains its most popular apparel, under the Diesel and Diesel Black Gold brands. DKNY, founded in New York in 1984 by Donna Karan, offers eclectic, fun, wearable fashion with the energy and spirit of New York. Dockers, introduced by Levi Strauss and Co. in 1986 under Bob Siegel, became a leading brand of business casual clothing for men on the strength of the khaki pant, a garment traced to Sir Henry Lumsden in 1846, and relaunched itself with the Wear The Pants Super Bowl campaign of January 2010.
Start from the kind of research you are doing. For a brand's story, open its profile: each one sets out its founding facts, ownership changes and product claims in full, and each carries the official brand site in References where one is available, which DKNY and Dockers do not have. For a purchase, use the shopping buttons on each profile and the men's clothing store directory linked from every page, and judge each garment against the standard its own profile records, from Dickies' quality, toughness and pride to Duofold's balance of cotton comfort and wool warmth.
Five names make the D section: a workwear giant and a base layer inventor, an Italian denim house and a New York fashion house, and the khaki brand of the business casual office. That is the D section - its order and its range.
